Chicago Tribune Highlights Ian Mahanes’s Time With Best Buddies International

BBLogo-color-largePioneer Press, a division of the Chicago Tribune, sat down with senior captain midfielder Ian Mahanes to talk about lacrosse and, more importantly, Mahanes’s role as President of the Oak Park-River Forest chapter of Best Buddies International, a non-profit organization designed to create opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to connect with new friends and mentors.  Mahanes, a four-year member of the group, expressed his passionate endorsement of the organization, stating,

“People with disabilities should have the same rights as any other citizen … [,however, a] lot of my parents’ generation was shielded from kids with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Best Buddies doesn’t want a separate wing in schools where those students can be. They want us to integrate and be able to see each other in the hallways.”

When asked about the Huskies’ season, Mahanes stated confidently,

“Every kid has bought in and I’ve never seen us play lacrosse like this before … [b]y the end of the season we’re going to be good enough to make a pretty respect[able] run in the playoffs.”
